autonomic network system presented by Peter Schmidt. This system uses a
novel architecture to enable it to be self-governing, reacting dynamically

deliver a constantly evolving, optimal matching of resources to demand. The
system is currently deployed at over 10,000 sites worldwide, has been in
deployment since 2003, and is on version 6.0. It is a different - and
better - way to operate enterprise WANs."
Here is a brief outline for the presentation:

Peter H. Schmidt, CTO North America for Ipanema Technologies, is an
experienced product architect, executive and entrepreneur in the networking
space, having founded and led two networking startups and played significant
roles with eight others as an advisor, director or angel investor. He has
brought seven networking products to market successfully in the past fifteen
years. During the past eight years with Ipanema, he has worked extensively
with prospective customers and partners in North America.
Previously, Mr. Schmidt led Teradyne NorthStar Internetworking as its
co-founder and General Manager. Mr. Schmidt is co-inventor on four patents
issued to NorthStar for its unique, network-located active fault isolation
system for automating consumer Internet support. In 1998, NorthStar was
spun out of Midnight Networks, a company he co-founded in 1992 and which was
acquired by Teradyne in 1996 for $20 million. Midnight Networks established
its ANVL and Avalanche/RA network testing products as de facto industry
standards, selling them to every major network equipment vendor and computer
manufacturer, and to over half of all venture-funded startups in
datacom/telecom.
In 1996, Midnight Networks became the subject of a Harvard Business School
case developed by Prof. H. Kent Bowen that profiles the founders' success in
creating a new and innovative approach to building a startup company. An
analysis of this case was presented in a special section of the Wall Street
Journal in June, 1999. Mr. Schmidt has been a speaker, panelist and panel
chair at Internet World, Interop, FutureNet and the Mass Telecom Council.
In addition, he is frequently invited to speak to classes at MIT, Harvard
and the Olin College of Engineering.
Prior to the founding of Midnight Networks, Mr. Schmidt was employed as an
internal consultant to the CEO of Analog Devices. His early experience was
gained at BBN and Cayman Systems, Inc. Mr. Schmidt earned a BS in Computer
Science and Engineering and MS in Management, both from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
